Folkform: The Museum of Masonite

Folkform: The Museum of Masonite is an exhibition of Masonite works from the Stockholm-based design studio Folkform, highlighting the importance of keeping small-scale, local industry alive.

The Folkform duo got to know each other at the Stockholm University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, where they created their renowned furniture with flowers pressed into Masonite. Since establishing Folkform in 2005, the studio’s founders Anna Holmquist and Chandra Ahlsell, have explored Sweden’s industrial heritage by creating objects that are at the intersection of craftsmanship and industry. Alongside studio-produced objects in limited editions, Folkform: Museum of Masonite, also presents parts of Folkform’s design process through the book The production Novellas, which will be presented with daily book readings.

“Today, it feels more important than ever to gather and spread knowledge about how furniture and other objects are actually made,” say the duo. “The proximity to the manufacturing processes has become even more meaningful.”

After the opening at Stockholm Furniture Fair, the exhibition will continue to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, Mississippi, where Masonite was invented in 1924.
